What is the best Usenet Server?

Question by siztastical: What is the best Usenet Server?
So I have decided to sign up with a Usenet Server. Which is the best? I’ve heard good things about UsenetServer and Giganews. Giganews seems more user friendly but more expensive… What do people recommend?

Best answer:

Answer by Yahoo! Answerer
I chose Giganews. I only got one month of a Platinum account in the hopes that since I have unlimited transfer, I will download anything and everything I could possibly need within the month I have.

Question by iVegan: Ok, I’m confused with this Usenet stuff.. Can someone help me?

Also, I’m praying this is free. I’ve heard people talking about monthly prices?

Thanks!

USENET is not used by the number of people that it once was. You used to need a newsreader program and an ISP that provided news feeds to get it. I can get the same type of thing from subscribing to groups on google, yahoo……etc

Question by uga2007130: I need a usenet newsreader.Any suggestions?
I need one that I can search newsgroups and posts with however.Such a hassle browsing every group for text I wanna read. And Newsrover or Newsleecher are not an option as they wont work on my computer for some reason.

Best answer:

Answer by CinderBlock
Well, you’re going to have to look into why Newsrover and Newsleecher don’t work. Whatever is stopping them will likely stop any other programmed usenet newsreader.

“groups supported by usenet are easy to access on google. Why can’t I acess them on Yahoo.?

Question by mkingpert: “groups supported by usenet are easy to access on google. Why can’t I acess them on Yahoo.?
check out comp.soft-sys.sas it’s a great site but it looks like you have to go through google to get to it. why not yahoo? Also, google seems like a much better group bulletin board. It let’s the user stay in control of his/her posts. so when you want to delete them you can!

I believe there is an Internet protocol that must be followed to handle Usenet – NNTP. I don’t think Yahoo follows this protocol.

I came to Yahoo Groups from Usenet because of one simple reason: Starting a new Usenet Group was WAY too political. At Yahoo I could just click a few buttons and bingo.

At the time Google did not offer Groups...

what is USEnet? When was it started?

Question by Knight of Mirrors: what is USEnet? When was it started?
If someone could direct me to a site that answers these questions I would appreciate it. I’m not allowed to source Wikipedia, answers.com, or Wikihow. I’ve been to the USEnet site, but I didn’t see the date started.

Thank you.

You don’t have to source Wikipedia – if you find the answer you’re looking for & there’s a citation, you can use that as the source.

Here’s some more credible-looking information, though:

Question by techfiddle: What does it mean to spoof someone’s account, like on USENET?
I don’t mean phishing emails, I mean pretending to be you on USENET.

Answer by redsoxer
Happens all the time on Usenet, it’s no big deal. Most people on newsgroups know how to check the headers of a post and can tell that it’s not you posting. It’s for this reason that most people post using usernames rather than their real names.

Posting to a newsgroup is essentially the same as sending an email and anyone can post with any name they want and just as you can easily change the “From” address in an email, you can do the same thing when posting to a newsgroup. The “header” information won’t change, however.

What happened to usenet at midco.net?

Question by : What happened to usenet at midco.net?
I used to be able to access usenet through midco.net (my ISP) by using their server news.midco.net now it says that server is not reachable when I try to ping it.

Best answer:

Answer by HyTymez
Well I just called and asked, I also used the news servers quite a bit. They told me they canceled this service June 1st. Now If you would like to continue using the same service, they referred me to giganews.com In other words you now have to pay a monthly fee for the once free service.
