Hi I was using GrabIt with my account on xusenet server to download “alt.binaries.aoi” I sucessfully downloaded some pictures and movie files however some of the picture file turns into txt. How can I convert them to picture? GrabIt can’t convert them properly.

when grabbing files off a NNTP news server, they are commonly converted to a Text / mime format. It makes them larger – usually – but this format is accepted by most news servers , where others like jpeg, pdf, and other image formats would not work.

sometimes newsgroups don’t have all the parts. check the headers and count them to make sure they are all present. if any headers are missing or do not have the encoded parts included, you won’t be able to assemble the file.

you need to make sure all the parts are there _before_ you download!

There are binary applications available that do all this work for you...

Also, I’m praying this is free. I’ve heard people talking about monthly prices?

Thanks!

USENET is not used by the number of people that it once was. You used to need a newsreader program and an ISP that provided news feeds to get it. I can get the same type of thing from subscribing to groups on google, yahoo……etc

Answer by Dr.Mr.Ed
It should actually connect to your ISP’s usenet server. This is typically a server name like “news.ispcompany.net” or something similar. Unfortunately, many ISPs don’t host their own servers anymore, or if they do it’s a very limited set of groups. Many outsource to giganews or similar, but through a proxy and again the name would be something like the above.

Be careful, though, as some people like comcast, if you connect directly to their news server, have a very low limit...
