What’s the difference between Usenet and modern day message boards?

Question by Chase: What’s the difference between Usenet and modern day message boards?

Best answer:

Answer by TechSono
The primary difference is that Usenet is a separate network. It can run independent of the internet, and uses the NNTP protocol as opposed to the web’s HTTP protocol. Usenet “binary” newsgroups can also contain files, 7.5 terabytes of files are uploaded/downloaded every day.

What’s a good free newsreader (usenet client)?

Question by Kyle: What’s a good free newsreader (usenet client)?
I’m new to newsgroups, I signed up with newsrazor just to try things out. I’ve been having difficulty finding a good, free client to search and download files. I really liked Grab-it but it really isn’t free. Any suggestions on what to use and how to use it?

I used to love Forte Free Agent but they don’t have it anymore. You might find an old copy of that somewhere.

These days I use XNews. It is really more for downloading binaries from binary groups, and it works great for that. But it also works with text groups, not perfect but good enough for free.

I was going to look up URLs for these programs, but if you’re getting into Usenet you will know how to find them with Google. 8^)

Arpanet was a military and educational link that was only really attached to universities. There was no centralized cost as we know it, the cost would have been by in the hardware at the ends, and the lines that connected them.

As for speed, it really can’t be measured in anything useful. It could send text.

After Arpanet, still in the early 80s, the only connections that rea...

A usenet is a topic based discussion thread where people can contribute to the ideas and discussions on that thread.
The theme generally determines what the information is that is contained on that usenet group.

The second link below is a beginners guide that is most helpful and a basic introduction.

Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Whats wrong with usenet nowadays? Why does my symantec antivirus see trojan horses when I download files?

Question by smoothie pro: Whats wrong with usenet nowadays? Why does my symantec antivirus see trojan horses when I download files?
I use giganews.com for usenet file downloads especially progs and for rars. I use symantec endpoint protection. Is the trojan horse real or AV is making a false alarm?

For the most part, it is usually a false alarm. HOWEVER, I would be especially careful when downloading any RAR files or Keygens. Keep track of what you download, and if your system starts acting up, IMMEDIATELY delete the recent “iffy” files you’ve downloaded and run spybot.
